John Younger – River Angling for Salmon and Trout (1995)
A handsome limited edition of one of the most remarkable works of nineteenth-century Scottish angling literature.
John Younger (1785–1860), the shoemaker of St Boswells on the River Tweed, was an extraordinary figure in the history of fly fishing. Largely self-educated, he became a respected poet, fly dresser and accomplished salmon angler, developing a practical understanding of the river that few of his contemporaries could rival.
First published in 1840, River Angling for Salmon and Trout is particularly celebrated for its observations on the salmon fishing of the Tweed and its early descriptions of traditional salmon flies. Younger's patterns belong to an important period in the development of Scottish salmon fly dressing, preceding the influential writings of William Scrope.
The work is notable for its independence of thought. Rather than relying solely upon established convention, Younger drew upon his own experience of fish, water, weather and the behaviour of salmon and trout. His discussions range from fly patterns and dressing techniques to casting, tackle, river conditions and the practical art of fishing.
This Flyfisher's Classic Library edition reproduces the enlarged third edition of 1864, incorporating a memoir of Younger, additional notes and material concerning the salmon casts and tributaries of the Tweed. It also includes Arthur Ransome's biographical appreciation, The Shoemaker of St Boswells.
This copy was published in 1995 in a limited edition of 1,000 copies. Beautifully produced, it is quarter-bound in dark red leather over matching cloth boards, with gilt spine lettering and the publisher's gilt motif to the front cover. Marbled endpapers, a silk marker ribbon and a frontispiece portrait with facsimile signature complete the presentation.
The book is in fine condition. The original slipcase is not present.
An appealing collector's edition of an important early work on Scottish salmon and trout fishing, particularly suited to admirers of the River Tweed and the traditions of the classic salmon fly.
