Alfred Ronalds – The Fly-Fisher's Entomology, 1913 De Luxe Edition
A particularly desirable de luxe edition of Alfred Ronalds’ The Fly-Fisher’s Entomology, published in Liverpool by Henry Young & Sons in 1913.
First published in 1836, Ronalds’ work occupies a foundational place in the literature of fly fishing. Through its careful study of aquatic insects and their imitation by artificial flies, it helped establish the close observation of entomology as an essential part of the fly fisher’s art.
This exceptional two-volume edition is number 243 of only 250 copies in the de luxe issue, within a total limitation of 270 copies.
Volume I contains the title printed in red and black and 20 plates, including six photographic views of rivers, two portraits and thirteen finely hand-coloured engraved plates. Volume II contains 48 original artificial flies, individually mounted within sunken, linen-backed mounts on nine substantial cards.
The volumes retain their original green morocco-backed cloth bindings, with gilt-decorated spines and gilt top edges. There is occasional light spotting, while the bindings show some rubbing at the extremities, consistent with their age.
Of particular distinction is the Cecil Harmsworth provenance. Harmsworth was a prominent British publisher, writer and dedicated angler, and his association with this copy places the work within the collecting and literary history of British fly fishing. His bookplate provides a tangible link between Ronalds’ seminal work and one of the notable angling libraries of the early twentieth century.
For the serious collector, this is an unusually complete and evocative edition: not merely a reproduction of Ronalds’ classic text, but a handsome physical record of the nineteenth-century tradition of observing, collecting and imitating the insects upon which the trout’s world depends.
