A pre-fire H.L. Leonard Model 51DF Tournament in excellent condition. This 9′ bamboo fly rod has three sections and two tips, with medium-tempered cane, pale yellow wraps tipped in oxblood, oxidized English-twist bronze snake guides, and an agate stripping guide.
The swelled butt carries a strap-and-ring hook keeper. A nickel silver winding check sits above the clean, somewhat ridged 5½″ cork grip, and the cap-and-ring reel seat is fitted over a mortised wood spacer. The butt cap retains the Leonard stamp in its cartouche, with “Tournament” stamped on the reverse. The used tip has lost some of the oxidation on the top guide (see image)
All sections are straight and full length, and the ferrules fit perfectly. The rod has a medium action and is best paired with a DT6 , though some casters may prefer a 5-weight line. The stated and measured weight is 5 oz.
